AUTUMN FOR THE SOUL

Learning to Let Go

Week 2: Releasing the past

for something new.

“Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead,

I press on towards the goal.”

Phillippians 3:13-14

Every fall, the trees give us a beautiful lesson in letting go.

One by one, their leaves change color and eventually loosen their hold. The tree doesn’t know exactly what the winter will bring. It simply releases to the season that is ending.

Letting go isn’t always that easy for us.

We hold tightly to memories, expectations, disappointments, relationships, old dreams, and sometimes even the old versions of ourselves. There can be comfort in what is familiar, even when we know God is asking us to move forward.

Letting go doesn’t mean that what came before wasn’t important.

Some seasons were wonderful. Some were difficult. Some changed us forever. We can be grateful for what they gave us without needing to live there forever.

Maybe that’s one of the gifts of getting older.

We begin to understand that life isn’t about holding on to everything. It’s about learning what deserves to come with us into the next season, and what we can lovingly place in God’s hands.

There may be something you’ve been carrying for a long time. A regret, a disappointment, a dream that didn’t happen the way you imagined, a relationship that changed, or simply the belief that the best part of your life has already happened.

What about if this fall, you loosened your grip just a little?

God isn’t asking you to erase your past. Your story matters. Every season has helped shape the woman you are today.

He may be asking you to trust Him enough to make room for something new, even if you cannot yet see what it will be. Sometimes God’s new work begins quietly, like the first signs of spring hidden beneath the soil.

The trees remind us that letting go isn’t always an ending.

Sometimes it’s how we prepare for what’s coming next. Sometimes releasing the old is how we become ready to perceive the new thing God is bringing to life.

PRAYER

Father,

Thank You for every season that has brought me to where I am today. Thank You for the memories, lessons, joys, and challenges that have shaped me.

Your Word says, “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past.” Help me release what You are asking me to place in Your hands. Keep me from living in regret, clinging to disappointment, or allowing yesterday to prevent me from receiving today.

Give me courage to let go without fear and the faith to believe Your promise: “See, I am doing a new thing!” When I cannot yet perceive what you are doing, help me trust that You are already at work.

Help me carry forward the wisdom and love from my past without allowing the past to hold me back. Open my eyes to the new paths new possibilities, and new growth You are bringing into my life.

I place what I cannot change into Your hands, and I open my heart to the new things You have for me.

Amen.

Reflection

  • Is there something from a past season that I’m having difficulty letting go of?

  • What might I be afraid will happen if I release it?

  • What would it look like to place the past in God’’s hands and make room for what He is doing today?

Late Bloomer Affirmation

I can honor where I’ve been without staying there. I can release the past into God’s hands.
